Swimming Report – Mar 2013

Graeme Brown and Jamie Dominick though restricting their competitive swimming at the moment due to injury and exams, entered a couple of events each in the West District Senior Age group Championships at East Kilbride on 2 March. Jamie’s better performance was in the 200 fly where he produced a long course best, and Graeme’s 100 back was a good long course time also.

On 16/17 March Dunoon swimmers entered new territory by taking part in the Portobello Mad March Meet, held in the Mercat Gait pool in Prestonpans.

On a cold driech Saturday the 11 and under age group events took place. The pool was certainly warm enough and the pace of racing was also hot.

The youngsters from Dunoon came home with medals and personal best times for their efforts. Alistair Gibson (10) achieved silver in an exciting 50 metres breaststroke, and Ross Colquhoun (8) gained bronze in 50 Fly, while Finlay Martin won 2 bronze and one silver in the breaststroke, Individual Medley and Fly respectively. Personal best times also came from Mollaidh Martin (10), Connor Kennedy (11) who raced to a 33 seconds PB in the 50 freestyle, and Joshua Colquhoun (10).

On a sunnier Sunday, Kyle Martin and Nicky Ritchie both in the 12 years age group fared very well.  Kyle started off with a great PB in the 50 freestyle, and then was disappointed to be disqualified for a technically incorrect turn in the 200 metres backstroke – where another good PB was on the cards. Meanwhile Nicky Ritchie had a superb PB in the 200 metres breaststroke, slicing 14 seconds off his old time and bringing his ranking up to 5

The competition from the East and Midlands was of a very high standard and the meet itself was well organised, so the Club may well revisit this meet next year.

The Riverside Pool was the scene of the first round of this year’s mini league competition – for the 11 years and under age groups.

Competition came from REN96, West Dumbarton and Kingston and while these very strong and big teams all gained more points than the home team, the Dunoon swimmers put in really good performances.

The team of 20 swimmers included Anya McGillivray, Georgia Cowan, Finlay Martin, Lili Danby, Oscar McGillivray, Ross Colquhoun. Kaitlin Rowley, Reece McIntyre, Alan Stewart, Mollaidh Martin, Mhairi Rowley, Cally McNaughton, Alistair Gibson, Neily McNaughton, Connor Kennedy, Joshua Colquhoun, Orla Colquhoun, Kayleigh Hartley-Watson and Finan Kennedy.

The next round takes place on 7 April.

On this coming weekend, Rhys Meyer-McDonagh, Rachel Turnbull, Neil Lamont and Katy Marshall are due to participate in the REN96 Graded Meet at Bellshill ‘s Sir Matt Busby Pool.
